Arbor Day events around the Council Bluffs Area

Arbor Day Funds Offered to Pott. Schools

$1,750 has been approved thusfar for Arbor Day tree projects in Pottawattamie County for 2008. The funds will go to Treynor and Council Bluffs elementary schools for tree stock to celebrate Arbor Day. Pheasants Forever Chapter of Pottawattamie County is providing the money. It has made the offer of funding to all the schools in the county, so that dollar figure may grow.

Pheasants Forever is utilizing funds raised by their very successful Hunting, Fishing, and Outdoor Sports Expo held at the Mid America Center last January. The chapter has offered each school $250 for nursery stock. Council Bluffs School District will use the funds at six elementary schools for Arbor Day projects.

At Treynor Elementary, the 5th grade students will be planting eight trees on Friday April 11. Four of those will be on school grounds, two will be on the Commons area in downtown Treynor, and two will be at the East City Park. Treynor has also applied for financial assistance from the Council Bluffs Trees Forever chapter. The Treynor Optimist Club volunteers to assist with the tree planting along with volunteers from Pottawattamie Master Gardeners.

We hope to hear from other schools as well with our PF funding offer. It does not have to be elementary students. It can also be a junior or senior high project for a science class, Voc Ag class, Honor Society, or any group. We just want students to make a difference in their environment in their own part of the world. Improving the world starts at home and we want to help students use Arbor Day to improve their school, park, or public space.” said John Klein.

Traditionally, Arbor Day is the last Friday in May, but it can be celebrated at a date that best fits the school schedule.

Pheasants Forever's main goal is large improvement projects, such as the recent addition to the Farm Creek Wildlife Area east of Carson. But they also encourage people to make a difference on smaller scale projects. PF funds private landowners in establishment of habitat projects on private lands. They also assist with funding of projects for the East and West Pottawattamie Soil Conservation Districts and County Conservation Board.

We are currently using a large chuck of money to match the Iowa West Foundation grant of $50,000 for improvements to the new 200 acre addition to the Farm Creek Wildlife Area. A new pond will be built this year. We certainly want to thank all the people who supported PF by attending our Outdoor Sports Expo in January or our annual PF Banquet in February. We have had great support and we want to pay back some of that by assisting with outdoor projects for county young people. For more information, contact John Klein at 712-487-3807.
